In religious art, gods are shown enthroned, and the seat stands for the authority of whoever occupies it. Here the throne is a monobloc – one piece of moulded plastic, made by the million, identical anywhere in the world. Like these chairs, gods may well also be man-made.
The work reflects a present in which every tradition is re-examined and most are ruled out as obsolete. A pantheon was once an ordered hierarchy of named powers, while in this one every member is interchangeable, every seat is empty, and nothing distinguishes one from the next.
The gods are not overthrown, only discarded.
Not even gods are devoid of oblivion.
